Evaluation

My media product uses, develops and challenge forms and conventions of real media products in different ways. One way it develops the conventions of a real media product is through the use of mise-en-scene, my genre of film is horror with the sub-genre of zombies. In which I used the convention of the stereotypical mise-en-scene to create a ‘realistic’ and conventional look of zombies in which I used fake blood and make-up to create the look of them being flesh eating monsters which were previously human, so I kept the makeup to a minimum in a way to let the audience know they are clearly zombies but at the same time keep them slightly human which in a way challenges the form of real media products in that most zombies in films are shown to be so un-human yet I have kept my zombies slightly human for the simple fact that I didn’t want to fully follow the convention of the media product as I wanted to make the product unique to me as I am classed as the auteur of this product. A way my product develops the conventions of a real media product is the editing, it is the fact that it is filmed in black and white, most modern day films and trailers, with exceptions such as ‘The Artist’ 2011, it is very rare to in this postmodern society find a black and white horror film, which demonstrates how I am challenging the forms of real media products. It challenges the conventions of real media products by the lack of dialogue. This lack of dialogue was a conscious choice made and replaced by a soundtrack by the pop artist Lorde, I did this to not only challenge the conventions of real media products which normally include dialogue in trailers to in a way not only explain the plot but to give the audience a hint of what is to come within the film, adding to the effect of the trailer but I think my lack of sound works due to the fact that the actions, mise-en-scene and editing within the trailer tell the audience everything they would possibly need to know without hearing any form of dialogue which challenges the convention of real media products. I did this to create something more unique and different to other existing media products because I think the media is always changing and old fashions are re-appearing in modern day society so I feel that eventually silent black and white movies will come back into fashion, causing a new post-modern trend of recycling existing conventions to make new ones. My editing techniques such as the slow motion and rewind feature challenges the conventions of real media products in the fact that most media products, trailers, use fragmented narrative but don’t use slow motion or the rewind feature. The only trailer I am aware of which uses slow motion and the rewind feature is the ‘Dead Island’ trailer for the game, in which it is fully animated but uses the slow motion and rewind feature which is very unconventional for trailers, as it challenges the conventions of existing media products. I used this feature to follow the convention of a fragmented narrative which is used in film trailers, I chose the slow motion and rewind to give it more of a fragmented narrative and to confuse the audience in a way to make them feel slightly disorientated putting them in the characters shoes which uses the convention from existing media products.

I feel the combination between my main product and ancillary texts is very effective due to the fact that both of my products give the same information but don’t tell too much or too little. They link as they are both black and white keeping the colour scheme which works because it would look stupid if the two products were completely different colours which demonstrates how they link together well complimenting one and other in colour and information. The ancillary texts give extra information to the trailer but doesn’t give away everything which I like because they complement each other in the fact that each give out a bit of information but not too much. The way I edited the ancillary text of the film poster was done in a way to add more to the main product. I used Photoshop to make the characters into silhouettes which creates and adds to the mystery which is what effect I wanted to create within the combination of the two. The blacked out silhouettes have a background of blood splatter adding to the effect and genre of a horror in which it follows conventions of real media products, film posters, in the nature of it being like previous film posters for horror films with the mise-en-scene of blood which is also in the film trailer linking the two products together through the use of mise-en-scene. The products also work very well together due to the silhouettes beings blacked out but still clear on who the characters are, which I think is effective due to the audience being able to relate the two easily knowing they belong together in a way, knowing like that without a doubt that poster is for that trailer without having to take a moment of thought to figure it out. The magazine front cover and the film poster are effective together as I consciously chose to use the same sort of font and lay out of the products to make them similar but as different mediums. I used the same font for both name titles within the ancillary texts to link them together.

From my audience feedback I have learnt many things such as; that my target audience of fifteen to twenty five year olds of both genders was a perfect age range as from my feedback the participants stated that the narrative, which they got from my media product in which there is a fragmented narrative, would be appealing to them but they agreed with how graphic horror films, specifically zombie films are anyone under fifteen it would not be acceptable for. The participants of my audience feedback questioners said that they thought the music used fitted well with the trailer although they would have liked some sound effect such as zombie groans and screams ect, which fit more with the genre of horror films than just a song although I did this to challenge the conventions of existing media products, so if I were to do it again I would include sound effects such as zombie groans and screaming people over the music at appropriate times to add to the effect of the film trailer following the conventions of existing products. The feedback also included comments of how the audience used liked the way it was in black and white because it was different from current existing products which they said worked well in standing out from other existing products, so if I was to re-do my product I would keep the element of black and white within the trailer as the audience thought it worked well within the product. From the audience feedback I have learnt that the target audience which I was correct about age range, enjoyed the difference of it being in black and white instead of colour but the sound could have been better done with the use of dialogue or sound effects.

I used media technologies in the construction and research stage by using web 2.0 to research existing media products on youtube to get inspiration of what existing products are out there, I then used the existing products I found and embedded them into my blog to evaluate them to see how the existing products have used the micro-technical elements to create the genre in which the trailers fitted into. I used media technologies such as web 2.0 programs such as prezi and go animate during my planning stages to create mind maps of all my ideas making them more visual and easier for me to work out what ideas would and wouldn’t be possible to do in the trailer.

Magazine front covers:

The Magazine front cover for the film 'Inception' is done in a way in which the feel of the film is shown within the magazine front cover. The use of the one main image, of Leonardo Dicaprio, the main character of the film is shown, just like in the film posters. The title of the film is centred aswell as the picture. Other films, blockbusters, are used on either side of the image as a convention of the magazine front cover/magazine. The writing is three different primary colours which makes some words stand out more than others. A pull quote is used under the title of the film, from the article, to re-enforce the positive attitude towards the film in which the writer has written the article in. The Directiors name 'Christopher Nolan' is used above the title giving him authorship of the film but also to give the audience an insight into the film and how it is filmed as Christoper Nolan, to film lovers, is a a well known director.  The use of the directionality of the text re-enforces the key themes within the text, this is done to make the magazine cover more attractive and stand out to the target audience at hand. The use of photoshop has allowed Empire's producer to photoshop in a city landscape, taken from a high angle, making the magazine front cover a representation and reflection of the film at hand.

Filiming

Preparation for filming:

Preparation for the filming, included doing make up for the zombies, which was very important as without the mise-en-scene of the teaser trailer as without the mise-en-scene of the zombie make-up. The use of the fake blood adds to the effect of narrative of a zombie apocalypse. I used fake blood and white face paint to create the dead, blood look of the zombies. I let people wear their normal clothing because in the trailer the narrative is that they have just changed to zombies.

Conventions of form: Short Film

What makes a good media product.

Bad examples of media products:

CAGED: Film Trailer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZY3PfZyH04#t=85

This A2 media product isn't a good product due to the unclear, hard to follow narrative, the bad camera work, in which shots are poorly done which don’t look right, bad acting and terrible editing. This makes the product look very unrealistic and not successful as a media product.

Mise-en-scene

Cinematography
Editing
Sound
Bad use of location, un-realistic to trailer genre

No effort put into thought of costume

So basic, lack of everything within the macro feature of mise-en-scene

Bad use of lighting

Bad acting – not able to understand which character is which and who the bad and good characters are.
Incorrect camera shots used.

Badly framed shots

Shots too dark, so unable to see the action

Basic fade editing which is over used

Badly done with ‘quotes’ and information of films, not convention and very cliché

Music doesn't fit the trailer, should be faced paced music.

Unable to hear speech at some points, music too loud.

Good examples of media products:

Strangers: Film Trailerhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNpB0eG5ekc

This is a very successful A2 media product because it is well planned, editing, clear and concise as a trailer. It gives the audience a clear perspective of the narrative in a matter of shots, it is well shot with good camera shots and correct angles.

Mise-en-scene

Cinematography
Editing
Sound
Good use of mise-en-scene for the kitchen: realistic

Good use of mise-en-scene to show after math of earth-quake

Good use of filming within the trailer with another camera.

Good use of costume to demonstrate the difference in characters and importance of them

Good use of pans as a location shot

Good use of shots such as depth of field

Good use of camera movement to demonstrate earth-quake

Well shot, correct camera angles

Clear information with opening shot of the words ‘England 2015’

Clever use of cuts to title shots

Good use of out of focus filming to make character and audience feel distraught.

News report – good effect.

Cut at right moments
Hard to understand V.O and what it is saying

Good use of news V.O with realistic feel to trailer

Good use of sound with the news reporter V.O

Good use of V.O with the most important information louder

Screenplay codes and conventions

Above there is a section taken from the Superman film in which I have analysed to show what should be included in which is included in the slide below

This is showing the codes and conventions of a film script and where these are included, they should be included in each script for the following reasons:
  • Page numbers -
For reference in which page the actors/directors or need to be on.
  • Stage directions -
For reference to know where, what and how the actors need to be doing
  • Character names-
To know who is speaking for the crew to know who to show in the shot
  • Directors notes -
For the crew, director and everyone else to be aware of what needs to be done for improvement.
  • Way of speech -
The way the character must speak the line to know the effect for the scene

This is a phony script I made copying the codes and conventions of a movie script.

My Initial Ideas

Initial idea 1:

Spoof horror film where the protagonist roles are switched in which males are seen as the scared, passive, crying stereotypical girl roles and the females are the strong, dominant, brave, take charge character in which the antagonist is also a female doing a complete role reversal of the narrative.

Initial idea 2:

Reverse story during a zombie apocalypse in which is starts at the end and finishes at the beginning with only two main characters, a few zombies and some extra non-crucial characters in which the tragedy is at the beginning, but at the end it is still a huge climax to be revealed about one of the main characters.

Initial idea 3:

Recreation of Michael Jackson’s thriller music video as a short film, as a tribute to the late Michael Jackson which would have included iconic mise-en-scene such as the red jacket, the cinema and the glove used in his video. It would have been recreated as accurately as possible.

Genre - Themes

Generally within the horror genre the usual themes are:

  • Good VS Evil -

So the devil is usually included within the narrative, in which the devil is the antagonist and the protagonist must defeat/destroy the devil, which then leads to the resolution of the film in which the devil has been 'defeated' or 'destroyed'

  • Religion -

Usually in horror films religion is a big part of it as is the devil, so both link in well with each other so stereotypically they will both be included together.

  • The |Family

Usually issue arise in horror films around the family, where the family is part of the victim or the family is the cause of the problems for instance in 'The Conjuring' the whole family is effected by the devil (which links to the other two themes usually found in horror films.

  • Insanity

Insanity is usually a big part of horror films due to the fact of most horror film settings been done in mental asylums but also the antagonist are usually insane in which leads to them killing people.

Genre - character types

My protagonist will be:
  • Strong
  • Female
  • 17-18
  • Independent
  • Indie
She will not convene to Laura Mulvey's 'Male Gaze Theory' in which there is explicit evidence of examples of women being presented as sexual objects in the media, through the use of camera movement and shot types. The main focus' are
  • How men look at women
  • How women view themselves
  • How women see other women
I want to not have the protagonist to be part of the male gaze theory and not to be seen as a sexual object, like in most other media products for example the trailer for sex tape, in which camera angles, shots and movement are used to show the female protagonist as a sexual object.

In my media product my protagonist will follow the conventions of a male instead of a female, in which the the female will have male protagonist characteristics of bravery, mental strength and power over the other characters in the media product. Although the male will also portray this just not as shown as much as the female protagonist.

Genre - Narrative Structure

Stereotypically in horror films there is a male protagonist who will save the damsel in distress. Usually the narrative goes:

1. Protagonist ‘hero’ male and femalego out somewhere e.g. camping trip

 2.
Antagonistic murderer usuallywearing a mask or something to cover their face (also usually male)captures/ tries to kill/trapsprotagonist characters

 3.
Protagonists escape or die.

Stereotypically in zombie films the narrative usually goes:

1.
Out break on the news – people panic

2.
Introduced to characters
(stereotypically male protagonist)

3.
Kill some zombies and travel

4.
Either die or survive and left inconclusive

Although, these stereotypes can be broken:

Zombieland:

My narrative structure:My narrative structure will not follow the conventional narrative of structures, mine will be shown in reverse slow motion in which it will follow te conventions of a zombie film but in reverse in which it will make my media product unconventional but conventional at the same time. I think this will make my product unique.
